The Importance of Family  (or why we will never sell a lone duck)

Ducks are highly sociable and from ducklinghood form family groupings and partnerships that stay with them for life.

Separation from their family members causes great distress - and they will let you know by constant vocalisation (in the case of a female Call duck this will be very loud and insistent quacking).

As well as forming inseparable bonds with other ducks they can also form strong attachments to other species - even if the subject of their attachment is less committed!!

We had a male Call duck (Charley) who was hatched, and grew up, with a chicken. Although Charley became part of our duck flock he never forgot his chicken, and he would fly into the chickens' nest box to forcibly evict other chickens - as that was where his chicken laid her eggs.

We also have Spud, another Call duck drake, who was hatched and raised by a broody hen while our collie stood permanent guard, and he still follows our collie whenever he sees her. Spud is always accompanied by his best friend, a drake called Cake, hence our dog has an entourage!!

So, we will never sell lone ducklings, and if we are selling mature ducks we will always sell them with one or more ducks that they've been raised and lived with.
